Mega Hosters Claims to be "The Last Host You'll Every Need"
I was hired to work on a client's website hosted by MegaHosters.com. They do have a spiffy looking entry page which also claims "Hosting That Feels This Good' with a bunch of people partying. They push "Tech Support- We Take It Seriously!" with 24/7 tech support by phone, email, chat, support forum.
I knew there was something wrong with these people when I log into the control panel, first thing I noticed is they had and old version of Hsphere ( I worked with one of these panels years ago and so had to get re-acquainted with it.) I used their handy dandy EasyApp service to install Wordpress on the site, but it wouldn't allow me to install it in the root directory. So I made my first contact with the fantastic support service the so proudly boast of via support ticket form and ask the question on how to install Wordpress the way I wanted. They replied the next day that I couldn't install it in the root directory, and would have to create a directory just for it, maybe call it "/blog" they said, because I can always move it' index.html to the root directory and change some setting wp config page to get the same effort I'm looking for. So fine I do that, then I realize the Wordpress installed was a very old version ( you know, before Wordpress has automatic update and install features.) Well, I decided to update to the latest version, and when I go to log in I get this message "Your server is running PHP version 4.4.8 but WordPress 3.2.1 requires at least 5.2.4.", OMG I say, that version isn't even updated! So, once again I go to a support ticket to see what they can do, then receive an answer the next day which says.."which domain do you have Wordpress installed on?" In the meantime while twiddling my thumbs for 2 days now, I respond with which domain name WP is installed on. I don't get answer all day, I then summit another ticket indicating that I need to get it fixed so I can starting working on the client's website...still no answer! Here it is, the next day with no answer, so I pickup the phone and leave a detailed message and expect no service until tomorrow...yawn.
So here is my assessment, they claim in their slogan "The Last Host You'll Every Need", more like "The Last Host I'd Ever Want!". Their 24/7 support is awful, control panel and scripts are very outdated. I will recommend to my client that they move their domains to another host. After researching these guys on the internet, reports show they host 938 domains in total. I have a feeling these Canadian guys cranked the service up in 2002 and juiced up the website so they look bigger and better than they really are. They then put it on autopilot, took a few calls and started to collect those 8-10K monthly checks and their happy. In the meantime I continue to sit here and twiddle my thumbs.
Biggest Pro: None
Biggest Con: Bad Support, Bad Service, Outdated control panel and scripts
